Bustrillo, Goc embrace new beginnings in PVL Draft

As the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Rookie Draft approaches, University of the Philippines' Steph Bustrillo and Abi Goc are gearing up for a new chapter in their volleyball careers, fortified by the wisdom of their mentor, Oliver Almadro.

Coach Almadro, renowned for his expertise both in the UAAP and PVL arenas, played a crucial role in shaping Bustrillo and Goc's final year with the Fighting Maroons.

His advice resonates deeply with the players, transcending the volleyball court to influence their approach to life's challenges.

“Palagi po kasing sinasabi ni Coach O na see the good in everything. Naa-apply din po namin siya hindi lang sa court, pati po sa real life namin na kahit maraming problems at challenges sa buhay, nakikita pa rin namin po kung para saan po yun,” shared Bustrillo, reflecting on the invaluable lessons from her coach.

Goc echoes similar sentiments, emphasizing the positive mindset instilled by Coach Almadro.

“For me, as he always says, see the good in everything. This is a good challenge, mag-enjoy lang throughout the journey, which is [a] fresh start as well," she affirmed.

The transition from collegiate to professional volleyball marks a significant milestone for Bustrillo and Goc, especially after a challenging UAAP season where UP faced adversity with a 1-13 record. However, their focus remains forward-looking as they prepare for the PVL Draft on July 8 at Novotel.

Joining them in this pivotal moment is their longtime teammate, Jewel Encarnacion, making it a trio of UP hopefuls aiming to make their mark in the inaugural PVL event. The camaraderie and mutual support among the teammates have proven invaluable during the Draft Combine, where they navigate the competitive landscape of professional volleyball.

“Syempre proud din po sa isa’t isa kasi sinasabi nga namin Day 1 done, we should focus more on tomorrow sa second day. Talagang yun yung maganda na galing kayo sa isang school na magkakakilala kayo so you can motivate one another,” shared Goc, highlighting the bond forged through years of playing together.

Bustrillo, a 24-year-old outside hitter from Cebu, echoes Goc's sentiments, expressing her joy in continuing the journey alongside familiar faces beyond their UAAP days.

“Sobrang nakakatuwa lang din po na after nga ng UAAP days namin na tapos na kami doon, nakakatuwa na makita naman na sa PVL naman po,” she remarked.

With their sights set on new challenges and opportunities, Bustrillo, Goc, and Encarnacion embody resilience, teamwork, and the spirit of sportsmanship instilled by Almadro.

As they prepare to embark on their professional careers, their journey from UP to the PVL promises to be a testament to dedication and determination in Philippine volleyball.
