In a dramatic turn of events, Choco Mucho finally clinched its first win in the 2024 PVL Reinforced Conference with a commanding four-set victory over ZUS Coffee.
However, the triumph came with a significant tactical decision that tested the Flying Titans’ depth and adaptability.
Midway through the first set—the only set Choco Mucho would lose in this match—head coach Dante Alinsunurin made the bold decision to bench Greek import Zoi Faki.
“Nakita ko lang na hanggang ngayon, medyo pagod pa rin si Zoi sa ginagawa namin. Nakita rin ng coaches namin na mas mababawasan na yung gusto naming gawin sa loob ng court kasi nga mas iniintindi pa namin siya kung ano ang dapat gawin namin,” Alinsunurin explained after the game.
Alinsunurin’s decision to rest Faki and bring in opposite spiker Dindin Santiago-Manabat was not solely about managing fatigue. The Flying Titans had struggled offensively in the first set, which they lost decisively 25-14.
“Sa sitwasyon namin ngayong first set, talagang yun ang kulang namin, kung paano kami umopensa at paano kami pumatay ng bola,” Alinsunurin said, acknowledging the team’s offensive struggles.
He further elaborated on the decision to substitute Santiago-Manabat, stating, “Madali namang iguide si Dindin kasi kakilala ko na rin siya before pumunta rito, kaya kung ano lang yung binibigay ko sa kanya, ginagawa naman niya.”
The strategic shift paid off. With Faki resting on the sidelines, Choco Mucho’s local players stepped up. Royse Tubino emerged as the standout performer, delivering a remarkable 21 points with a 50-percent attack efficiency.
Team captain Maddie Madayag and Maika Ortiz also contributed significantly, combining for 17 points and helping secure the Flying Titans’ first win of the Reinforced Conference.
“Yung coaching staff ko, tinanong ko rin sila na kailangan talaga natin magpalit nung una at kailangan ipahinga siya. Ako naman, sobrang tiwala ako sa pinasok ko nung second set kasi yun talaga yung tao ko,” Alinsunurin said.
