PVL to finalize trade rules

The Premier Volleyball League (PVL) is set to establish official rules on player trades ahead of its upcoming season.

PVL Chairman of the Control Committee, Sherwin Malonzo, discussed the matter during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum, revealing initial details on the proposed regulations.

Malonzo emphasized that while the league is moving towards allowing trades, draft rights and rookies will be off-limits for negotiations.

“Ang rookie hindi puwedeng i-trade but we already introduced the idea of trading to the teams,” said Malonzo.

He clarified that rookies can only become tradeable after completing at least one full season with the team that drafted them.

“Ang trading natin kung rookie, kailangan mag-stay muna ng one season sa teams bago sila pwede i-trade, so after one season, saka lang siya pwede i-trade ng isang team,” he explained.
“Yes, ‘yung draft rights hindi rin pwede i-trade.”

The new rules are especially timely, with a fresh batch of rookies—headlined by three-time UAAP MVP Bella Belen—set to enter the league through the 2025 PVL Rookie Draft, happening on June 8 at Novotel Manila.

Another key aspect being addressed is trading between sister teams. Of the PVL’s 12 franchises, six are considered sister squads: Creamline and Choco Mucho, Akari and Nxled, PLDT and Cignal.

“Bawal rin, which is discussed na rin sa teams, bawal ang trading among sister teams,” Malonzo said.

According to Malonzo, the league is targeting to finalize and release the trade rulebook within 2025.

The PVL will resume competition this July with the “PVL on Tour,” a series of matches that will run until September. The tour will take a break in time for the FIVB Men’s World Championship, which the Philippines is hosting.

PVL President Ricky Palou has also floated the idea of inviting foreign guest teams to join the tour, further adding to the excitement ahead of the official season.

The 2025 Reinforced Conference will formally kick off the league’s main calendar in October.

“Within the year, we’ll let you know kapag maayos na yung details, magkakaroon tayo this year,” Malonzo said, referring to the expected rollout of the new trade regulations.
