MINGLANILLA — In the heart of Cebu, amidst an electrified atmosphere, Vanie Gandler found a home away from home.
The Cignal HD Spikers leaned on the fervent energy of their Cebuano fans to overcome a mid-match disruption and secure a commanding win over Nxled at the 2024-25 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference.
With a 2-0 set lead and victory in sight, a power outage at the Minglanilla Sports Complex halted the momentum of both squads for nearly 30 minutes. For Gandler, the delay posed a unique challenge that tested her team’s focus and adaptability.
“That was actually hard because the momentum stopped for a long time and parang when you stop playing, then you play again after a long time, your body has to adapt again to it,” Gandler said.
The turning point came not from strategy or adjustments, but from the crowd itself. As the lights dimmed, the voices of the Cebuano faithful surged, chanting "Let's go, Cignal!" with an intensity that brought the team back to life.
“Of course, that boosted our morale because… in Manila, we don’t have this many people watching us, so it’s so touching to hear everyone cheering, ‘Let’s go Cignal, let’s go,’” shared the 24-year-old Gandler.
Buoyed by their fans’ enthusiasm, the HD Spikers powered through the third set to complete a straight-set triumph, 25-18, 25-22, 25-23. Gandler delivered a stellar performance, finishing with 13 points from nine attacks, three blocks, and one ace, along with six excellent digs.
Every time Gandler stepped to the service line, she was greeted with raucous cheers, and the heartfelt signs waving in the stands only deepened her connection with the audience.
“I’m really surprised, of course, because I don’t really go to Cebu. I’m touched to see na so many people support me here, and it really inspires me,” said Gandler, visibly moved by the outpouring of love. “It’s really fun playing here in Cebu; I’ve enjoyed my stay so far.”
Beyond the win, Gandler found meaning in the shared joy of the game, recognizing the impact she has on fans who look up to her.
“I’m super grateful, of course, to the fans. I’m happy that I have this kind of support here, and it really pushes me to do even better kasi one way or another, I know that I inspire people and entertain them,” she added.
